On September 25, the Marlins were eliminated from playoff contention for their second consecutive season after a 0–1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. For the third time in franchise history, the Marlins eliminated the New York Mets from playoff contention on the final day of the regular season, which allowed the Cincinnati Reds to clinch the final playoff spot instead.
