Rodríguez was born in Manatí, Puerto Rico and raised in Vega Baja, Puerto Rico. His father, José, was his baseball coach and his mother, Eva Torres, was an elementary school teacher. As a Little League player at age 8, he moved from pitcher and third baseman to catcher because his father thought he was throwing too hard and scaring opposing players. His favorite player growing up was Johnny Bench. He attended Lino Padron Rivera High School and signed a contract with the Texas Rangers in July 1988 at age 16. He made his MLB debut with the Texas Rangers on June 20, 1991, becoming the youngest player to catch in a major league game that season at 19. He won the 2003 World Series with the Florida Marlins and played in the 2006 World Series with the Tigers. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017 and into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in October 2024.

October 1997. The air in Miami is thick, humid, the kind that soaks your jersey before you even step onto the field. Pudge is crouched behind the plate, mask down, chest protector strapped tight. The Indians' runner is on first, one out, bottom of the seventh. The pitcher winds up. The batter swings—foul. The runner takes an extra step. Pudge doesn't even look up. He pops the ball, rises in one fluid motion, and fires to second. The throw arrives before the runner's foot leaves the bag. He slaps the dirt with his glove, looks up at the stands, and gives a small nod. The crowd roars. He doesn't smile. He just resets, drops back into the crouch, and waits for the next pitch. That's the job. That's the standard. And in that moment, in that humid October night, the whole young team behind him believes they can do anything.

Rodríguez was awarded the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 1999. He set an MLB record by catching his 2,227th game in 2009, passing Carlton Fisk for the most. He had the best career caught-stealing percentage of any major league catcher, at 45.68% (versus a league average of 31%), and had nine seasons with a caught-stealing rate of 50% or higher. He recorded 2,844 hits in his career, the most of any catcher in MLB history. Only one major league catcher (Yadier Molina) has more putouts.

• Rodríguez got his nickname 'Pudge' on the first day of camp from Rangers coach Chino Cadahia, who saw he was short and stocky.
• He set an MLB record for most doubles by a catcher in 1996 with 47, breaking Mickey Cochrane's mark of 42.
• In 1999, he became the first catcher in MLB history with more than 30 home runs, 100 RBIs, and 100 runs scored in a season.
• He caught Kenny Rogers' perfect game on July 28, 1994.
