He began his pro career with the Yakima Bears in the Low-A Northwest League and got his first major league call-up on August 15, 2011, ending that season with a 4-2 record over eight games, seven of them starts. In April 2012, Miley earned National League Rookie of the Month honors after posting a 3-0 mark with a 1.29 ERA and 15 strikeouts across 21 innings in two starts, and he carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Miami.
That rookie season, he made the NL All-Star team after starting 2012 with a 9-5 record and a 3.04 ERA. On October 1, 2012, he threw an immaculate inning against the Colorado Rockies. Overall in 2012, Miley won 16 games for Arizona in 29 starts plus three relief appearances, finishing with a 3.33 ERA over 194 2/3 innings. He was the runner-up for National League Rookie of the Year, losing to Bryce Harper.
On April 22, 2013, Miley hit his first career home run. He slipped from his rookie success in 2013, winning only 10 games despite pitching more than 200 innings. In 2014, he went 8-12 with a 4.34 ERA and 183 strikeouts. On December 12, 2014, the Diamondbacks traded Miley to the Boston Red Sox for pitchers Rubby De La Rosa and Allen Webster plus infielder Raymel Flores.
He agreed to a three-year, $19.25 million contract extension with Boston on February 5, 2015, and earned his first win with the team on April 21 by throwing 5 2/3 shutout innings against the Tampa Bay Rays. On December 7, 2015, the Red Sox traded Miley and Jonathan Aro to the Seattle Mariners for Roenis Elías and Carson Smith. In Seattle, he struggled to a 4.98 ERA and a 7-8 record with 82 strikeouts, though he threw seven scoreless innings against the Chicago Cubs in his final start for the team.
Personal life
Miley has been an avid hunter since age three. Growing up in Louisiana, he was a fan of the Atlanta Braves and now spends his off-season on his ranch near Austin, Texas. He and his wife, Katy, have a son born in September 2016. In June 2025, court documents accused Miley of supplying pain pills containing oxycodone to fellow pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who died of an accidental drug overdose in 2019; Miley responded that he had never been accused of any wrongdoing.
