According to legend, the Sirena Chilota lives near the island of Laitec in the Chiloé Archipelago. On moonlit nights, a sailor may see her sitting on rocks, combing her long golden hair with a golden comb. She sings alluring love songs, and sailors must be wary, as she may lure them into the ocean. If she likes a sailor, she may help him by shepherding fish to his boat.

When the Sirena Chilota lures a man into the ocean, he cannot resist her. Even after realizing she is part fish, it is too late to escape. She cries, and between her tears she sings about her loneliness. She then brings the man to the bottom of the ocean to live in a palace with her family. The man cannot return to his old life but receives immense treasure and riches.
