Mordin Solus

A fast-talking scientist who calculated the cost of survival for billions, only to find the final equation required his own sacrifice.

Mordin Solus is a fictional Salarian scientist and former Special Tasks Group (STG) operative who serves as a squadmate in Mass Effect 2. Known for his fast-talking, affable demeanor, he initially defends his past work strengthening the genophage, an artificial plague against the Krogan. Later, guided by logic that shifts into regret, he attempts to manufacture and distribute a cure during the Reaper invasion in Mass Effect 3. Voiced first by Michael Beattie and later William Salyers, Mordin is visually distinct as an older Salarian with one missing horn, inspired by Clint Eastwood. His musical theme, composed by David Kates, features electronic counterpoint elements reflecting his complex mind.

Lore & Background

Within the Mass Effect narrative, Mordin Solus was a member of the Salarian Special Tasks Group (STG) earlier in life. He helped create and distribute measures to strengthen the genophage, a population control plague used against the fast-breeding Krogan race. In Mass Effect 2, he serves as the Normandy's main doctor and scientist, defending his work on the genophage as a logical necessity. During this time, players can hear him sing an alternate version of Gilbert and Sullivan's Major-General's Song, a moment critics cited as one of the trilogy's best.

His loyalty mission involves locating his former assistant, Maelon, who was performing brutal experiments to cure the genophage on Tuchanka. Faced with Maelon's fate, Mordin experiences a moral crisis where the player must decide the outcome. If he survives Mass Effect 2, he returns in Mass Effect 3 to attempt manufacturing a cure and distributing it into the atmosphere of Tuchanka, the Krogan home world, amidst the galaxy-wide Reaper invasion.

Reader's Guide

Mordin Solus is a Salarian scientist whose cognitive speed manifests in rapid-fire dialogue requiring players to listen closely. He acts as the Normandy's primary doctor and researcher in Mass Effect 2, where his loyalty mission takes place on Tuchanka to find Maelon. His narrative arc centers on the genophage: first defending its creation by the STG, then attempting a cure in Mass Effect 3. Visual design differentiates him through an older look, one missing horn, and Eastwood-inspired features. Players can trigger his famous song performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's Major-General's Song. In Mass Effect 3, if he survived the Suicide Mission, he is found on Sur'Kesh working with a Krogan female survivor to finalize the cure before attempting deployment on Tuchanka. Merchandise includes busts and PVC statues, and his character received three "Best New Character" award nominations.
