Liara T'Soni
The pureblood scholar who became the galaxy's most powerful information broker and a leading authority on Prothean history.
Dr. Liara T'Soni is an asari archaeologist from Thessia who serves as a squadmate throughout BioWare's original Mass Effect trilogy. At 106 years old, she occupies the 'Maiden' stage of life but holds over a dozen doctorates, making her the galaxy's foremost expert on Prothean technology and the sudden disappearance of that ancient civilization fifty thousand years prior. Initially stigmatized as a 'pureblood' for having two asari parents, Liara overcame social bias to become a child prodigy in xenolinguistics and cryptanalysis. Her journey begins on Therum, where she aids Commander Shepard in uncovering the truth about Saren Arterius, eventually evolving from a shy researcher into the all-seeing Shadow Broker.

Lore & Background
Liara T'Soni is the estranged daughter of Matriarch Benezia, a powerful asari biotic. Born to two asari parents, she was labeled a 'pureblood'—a cruel insult in asari society that implies genetic stagnation, as their culture favors mixing with other species for new traits. Despite this stigma and being considered too young by her peers, Liara earned over a dozen doctorates on Thessia before the age of 106. She is technically an adult under Citadel law but was often dismissed academically due to her relative youth.
Her family tree holds further complexity; Mass Effect 3 reveals Matriarch Aethyta is also her biological parent, making Liara one-quarter krogan. Aethyta first appears in Mass Effect 2 working as a bartender on Illium, where she had secretly spied on Liara for years. While Liara initially claimed no one on Thessia listened to her council, forcing her into the life of an information broker, she eventually embraced this role after acquiring the Shadow Broker network.
Reader's Guide
Liara T'Soni is a biotic specialist whose combat style relies on mass effect fields created through electrical impulses from the brain. In Mass Effect, she is a capable combatant who states that until ambushed by a geth platoon and Krogan Battlemaster, she had never faced an enemy her biotics could not handle. Her role shifts dramatically after the events of Mass Effect 2. As the Shadow Broker, her resources and her knowledge of Prothean artifacts give her a pivotal role in Mass Effect 3's narrative. Her appearance changes from the green medical uniform of the first game to the white jacket and armor-like pieces introduced in the Lair of the Shadow Broker DLC, reflecting her transition from scientist to warrior. In Mass Effect 3, she returns as a combatant who has fully embraced her role in the war effort.
