Background
Sovereign serves as Saren's flagship and has unique mind-control capabilities: it indoctrinates both Saren and Matriarch Benezia. It tells Shepard that the Reapers do not call themselves Reapers; the name was given to them by the Protheans of the previous cycle.
Lead writer Drew Karpyshyn said Sovereign's conversation on Virmire hints that the Reapers are an unstoppable force. One critic noted that Sovereign's words and voice echo the Ur-Quan of Star Control almost line for line.
Inside Saren's base on Virmire, Shepard is confronted by Sovereign, which reveals itself to be a Reaper and explains that the Reapers wait outside the galaxy for organic life to develop and discover the mass relays, then harvest it at its peak. During the attack on the Citadel, Sovereign reanimates and possesses Saren's corpse to fight Shepard; when the corpse is destroyed, Sovereign is incapacitated and destroyed by the Alliance.
