Lore & Background
Javik's stasis pod is uncovered and opened by Commander Shepard and Liara T'Soni on the human colony of Eden Prime, where they are investigating Cerberus activity. Flashbacks of his memories during the mission show the Protheans' struggle against the Reapers. Javik is shocked to wake after 50,000 years and find everything he knew gone, but agrees to join Shepard to stop the Reapers at any cost.
Reader's Guide
Javik's design is based on the Collectors of Mass Effect 2, especially the shell-shaped head, with multiple pupils and secondary nostrils, but he is meant to look more intelligent than a Collector drone. His armour draws on samurai armour, to look technologically advanced yet ancient. In the first game the Protheans had appeared only as ambiguous statues on Ilos, because BioWare was not yet sure how large their role would be.
His first-hand view of the Protheans changes how the race is portrayed in the game, and causes friction with the Normandy's crew, especially Liara, whose picture of the Protheans was formed before he woke.
