Ground fighting
Hand-to-hand combat occurring while combatants are on the ground.
Ground fighting, also called ground work or ground game, is hand-to-hand combat that takes place while the combatants are on the ground. It is a central component of mixed martial arts and other combat sports, encompassing the grappling techniques used by a combatant on the ground. The term is most prominently associated with Brazilian jiu-jitsu and appears in varying degrees in submission wrestling, judo, jujutsu, sambo, shoot wrestling, hapkido, Dishuquan (Dog Kung Fu), some schools of shuai jiao, and other wrestling styles.

Lore & Background
Ground fighting implies that combatants are at very close range, often grappling each other using various holds. Depending on positioning, this proximity allows for techniques such as biting, chokeholds, fish-hooking, eye-gouging, joint locks, pressure point techniques, or various strikes. The top position is generally better for striking because the combatant can generate distance and movement, while the bottom combatant is restricted by the ground and the opponent above. Gravity also favors the top combatant when striking downward, and ground strikes may be amplified by driving the opponent into the ground.
Reader's Guide
Ground fighting is a fundamental aspect of many combat sports and martial arts, most notably Brazilian jiu-jitsu, where it is the main focus. Its significance lies in the fact that many fights end up on the ground, making proficiency in ground fighting critical for self-defense and competition. The discipline includes a wide range of techniques from grappling holds to strikes, with the effectiveness of strikes depending on the combatant's position. Traditionally neglected by most grappling arts, striking on the ground is now recognized as an important component. The types of strikes that can be employed effectively—such as elbows, headbutts, knees, and punches—depend on the specific grappling position. Ground fighting's legacy is evident in its integration into mixed martial arts and its continued evolution across various martial arts styles.
