Club "brand update"

Before the season, Manchester City announced adjustments to the club's brand alongside the recruitment of Pep Guardiola, a manager the club's executives had sought since joining four years earlier. On 15 October 2015, the club stated it would consult fans about designing a new badge to replace the 1997 design, which had been largely unpopular. The online consultation produced a design with hallmarks of the crest replaced in 1997 and elements from other City Football Group badges.

While praised for simplicity and similarity to the earlier design, it was criticised for an amateurish appearance, removal of the words "Football Club", and failure to closely replicate the previous badge. On 30 June 2016, the club renamed its Twitter accounts and website from MCFC to "ManCity". This change was popular among newer foreign fans but provoked mixed reactions from Manchester-based supporters, who criticised the use of a wording often employed by rivals and the removal of "Football Club".

Friendlies

Manchester City began pre-season on 20 July 2016 with a 0–1 defeat to Bayern Munich. The derby against Manchester United in the International Champions Cup was cancelled due to bad weather. City then played Borussia Dortmund, winning 6–5 on penalties after a 1–1 draw. On 7 August, they lost 3–2 to Arsenal in the 2016 Supermatchen. A behind-closed-doors friendly against St Johnstone replaced the cancelled Manchester United match.

Competitions

In the Premier League, 38 matches were played, two against each other team. As a Premier League club, City entered the FA Cup in the third round proper, drawing West Ham United away. As a European competitor, they entered the League Cup in the third round, drawing Swansea City away. In the Champions League, City finished second in a group containing Barcelona, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Celtic. They lost 0–4 away to Barcelona but won 3–1 at home. In the round of 16 against Monaco, City won the home leg 5–3 after trailing 1–2 and 2–3. In the away leg, they led 2–1 after a goal by Leroy Sané, but a late goal by Tiémoué Bakayoko eliminated City. The Champions League play-off round draw on 5 August 2016 paired City with Steaua București; the group stage draw on 25 August placed them with Barcelona, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and Celtic.
