Season summary

Before the previous season ended, Manchester City had agreed to recruit Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, a transfer confirmed on 13 June 2022, with Haaland joining the first team on 1 July. Julián Álvarez also joined from River Plate, having been transferred in January 2022 and loaned back. To replace former captain Fernandinho, City signed Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United for a reported £42 million plus add-ons on 4 July, taking the number 4 shirt.

City were also linked with a new left-back, with Marc Cucurella of Brighton reported as their primary target. Pedro Porro moved to Sporting CP via a loan-to-buy deal for £7.2 million, and Gavin Bazunu transferred to Southampton for an initial £12 million, potentially rising to £15 million; neither had made a first-team appearance for City. Pre-season saw several key players in the final years of their contracts, with Gabriel Jesus leaving for Arsenal for £45 million on 4 July, and Raheem Sterling joining Chelsea on 13 July for about £47.5 million plus add-ons. Sterling had won eleven domestic titles in seven seasons at City, scoring 131 goals in 339 appearances.

Competitions

The league fixtures were announced on 16 June 2022. In the FA Cup, City entered in the third round and were drawn at home to Chelsea. The fourth round draw paired them with the winner of Oxford United vs Arsenal, and in the fifth round they were drawn away to Bristol City. After winning, City were drawn at home to Burnley in the quarter-finals, then faced Sheffield United in the semi-finals, winning 3–0 to set up a Manchester derby final.

In the EFL Cup, City entered in the third round and were drawn at home to Chelsea. The fourth round draw gave them a home tie against Liverpool, played after the World Cup final. City were drawn away to Southampton in the quarter-finals, where they were knocked out. The Community Shield, normally at Wembley, was played at Leicester City's King Power Stadium to avoid clashes with UEFA Women's Euro 2022; City lost 1–3 to Liverpool.

In the UEFA Champions League, the group stage draw took place in Istanbul on 25 August 2022, with matches starting on 6 September and concluding in early November. The round of 16 draw paired City with RB Leipzig, and the quarter-final and semi-final draw on 17 March 2023 gave them Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals, with the winner facing either Real Madrid or Chelsea.

Statistics

Appearances numbers are for competitive games only, including substitute appearances. Red card numbers in parentheses represent red cards overturned for wrongful dismissal. The list is sorted alphabetically by surname when total goals are equal, and similarly for assists and cards. For goalkeepers, the list is sorted by shirt number when total clean sheets are equal; numbers in parentheses represent matches where both goalkeepers participated and both kept a clean sheet, with the number awarded to the goalkeeper who was substituted on.

Awards

Erling Haaland won multiple individual awards, including the European Golden Shoe, awarded to the highest goalscorer of all European top-division national leagues. The UEFA technical study group selected several City players as part of the team of the tournament. Other awards were determined by online votes of supporters on the official Manchester City website, votes of PFA members, votes on the Premier League website, and a combination of an online public vote on the EA Sports website with a panel of football experts.
