Overview
Beginning this season, club strips could feature sleeve sponsorship, with sponsors' logos appearing on the left sleeve instead of the Premier League patch. A three-man panel comprising a former player, a former manager, and a former match official began reviewing video evidence on Mondays after games; any player unanimously deemed by the panel to have caused an opponent's sending-off or won a penalty through simulation would be charged by the Football Association with "Successful Deception of a Match Official," carrying a two-match suspension.
Everton striker Oumar Niasse became the first Premier League player punished under this rule. Manchester City secured the championship after Manchester United lost 0–1 at home to West Bromwich Albion in the 33rd round. City had started the season with an away win over Brighton & Hove Albion, then drew with Everton before winning eighteen consecutive league games, holding first place for the remainder of the campaign. On 7 April, City hosted Manchester United needing a win to clinch the title, but United came back from 2–0 down at half-time to win 3–2.
The following week, United lost to bottom club West Bromwich Albion, and City defeated Tottenham Hotspur, ensuring an unassailable lead with five games left. During the season, City set English records for consecutive away victories (11) and overall victories (20) in all competitions, a new English record for consecutive league wins (18), and equalled the Premier League record for consecutive away league wins (11). They also achieved 28 consecutive games unbeaten in all competitions, 30 consecutive league games unbeaten, 20 consecutive home wins in all competitions, and 14 away wins in a season. City completed their second league and League Cup double in four years.
Teams
The league featured twenty clubs: the seventeen that stayed up from the prior season plus three promoted from the Championship. Newcastle United returned after a one-year absence, Brighton & Hove Albion after thirty-four years, and Huddersfield Town after forty-five years; both Brighton and Huddersfield were playing in the Premier League for the first time. They took the places of Hull City and Middlesbrough, each relegated after a single season, and Sunderland, which dropped after a decade in the top flight. Referee kits were produced by Nike, sponsored by EA Sports, and Nike also introduced a new match ball, the Ordem V Premier League.
