Liverpool won their nineteenth league title – the first since 1989–90 and the first during the Premier League era – clinching it on 25 June after Manchester City's defeat to Chelsea. They also won the UEFA Super Cup (beating Chelsea 5–4 on penalties after a 2–2 draw) and the FIFA Club World Cup (defeating Flamengo 1–0 after extra time), becoming the first English side to win the international double of the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in the same season. Liverpool were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup by Aston Villa and exited the UEFA Champions League in the round of 16 after a 4–2 aggregate defeat to Atlético Madrid.
