The club was founded in 1989 by former England international Liz Deighan as Newton LFC, later renamed Knowsley United WFC. In 1994, they linked with Liverpool FC and became Liverpool Ladies. They reached FA Women's Cup finals in 1994 and 1995, losing each time. After spells in the second tier, they were founding members of the Women's Super League in 2011. Under manager Matt Beard, Liverpool became the first English club to offer full-time professional contracts to female players in 2013, leading to WSL titles in 2013 and 2014. The 2019–20 WSL season was curtailed due to COVID-19 and relegation was suspended, so Liverpool Women were not officially relegated that season; they won the FA Women's Championship in 2022 to earn promotion back to the WSL.
