Yuta Okkotsu Returns

Lore & Background

Yuta Okkotsu began as an anomaly—a teenager surrounded and helped by the Cursed Spirit of Rika Orimoto, his childhood friend who died six years before the story and is cursed because both promised to get married. Under Satoru Gojo's guidance, he joined Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School to control Rika's Curse. In Jujutsu Kaisen, he appears as an experienced warrior. Akutami created Yuta alongside Rika as a duo inspired by Naruto Uzumaki from Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto, comparing Yuta with Yuji Itadori due to having to deal with inner beings with different personalities. For the main series, Akutami changed Yuta's look to avoid confusion with Megumi Fushiguro, and his unique white uniform was made to reference problematic students. Akutami planned that once Yuta would return, he would once again wear a white uniform in hopes older readers would remember him.

Reader's Guide

Yuta Okkotsu's return is woven into the aftermath of the Shibuya Incident, a catastrophic event that left the jujutsu world in disarray. Called back from abroad, he is named Yuji Itadori's executioner, stabs Yuji through the heart and then reveals that he staged the death at Gojo's request. His presence alters the strategic landscape, as he possesses the rare ability to copy techniques and deploy them alongside Rika's raw power. He then enters the Sendai Colony of the Culling Game, where he defeats several reincarnated sorcerers. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is an exploration of Yuta's grandchildren with Maki Zen'in as their grandmother.

Did You Know?

• Yuta's name Okkotsu (乙骨) sounded appealing to author Gege Akutami, while Yuta (憂太) was given for its kanji meaning 'One With Many Friends'.
• Akutami included Michizane Sugawara, a famous figure in Japanese history, as an ancestor of Yuta and Gojo as a tribute to former editor Yamanaka.
• In the English dub, Yuta is voiced by Kayleigh McKee, who was new to voice work and found the leading role nervous because she never had such a big role in her career.
• Akutami originally intended Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School to be a short series focused solely on Yuta's character arc, and created Yuji Itadori as a new protagonist for Jujutsu Kaisen.
• Yuta's first scene of being interrogated was influenced by the anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, which often uses a group known as SEELE that communicates with Gendo Ikari.
