Special Grade Curses
Malevolent spiritual entities born from humanity's negative emotions, wielding reality-warping powers to reshape the world.
In the world of Jujutsu Kaisen, Special Grade Curses are malevolent spiritual entities driven to harm humanity, often manifesting as grotesque monsters drawing on traditional Japanese folklore such as onryō (vengeful spirits), yūrei (ghosts), and yōkai. They arise from the accumulation of uncontrolled Cursed Energy, which flows from negative emotions that most people cannot control. Unlike lesser Curses, these entities possess refined Cursed Energy, allowing them to perform Cursed Techniques—specialized abilities that are often unique to the individual—and advanced Domain Expansions, which conjure a pocket dimension where their techniques are significantly enhanced and guaranteed to hit.

Lore & Background
In Jujutsu Kaisen, all living beings emanate Cursed Energy from negative emotions. Most people release this energy uncontrollably, and its accumulation gives rise to Curses. Special Grade Curses are among the most powerful of these entities. A group of intelligent Cursed Spirits—led by Suguru Geto (later revealed to be the ancient sorcerer Kenjaku inhabiting Geto's corpse)—plot an elaborate attack to reform Jujutsu according to their ideals, beginning with sealing away Satoru Gojo. The group includes the soul-manipulating Curse Mahito, fire Curse Jogo, and nature Curse Hanami. These Curses are not mindless; they possess distinct personalities and goals. Mahito treats humans as raw material for grotesque evolution, while Jogo and Hanami harbor a primal rage against modern civilization. Their power transcends simple energy output, manifesting techniques that defy physics—manipulating souls, igniting magma, or bending space to their will. Kenjaku, though a sorcerer and Curse User, is not a Curse himself but serves as a controller and manipulator of these entities.
In Their Own Story
On Halloween night in Shibuya, Geto's group launches their plan. Gojo destroys Hanami but is ultimately sealed by Geto, revealed to be Kenjaku inhabiting Geto's corpse. With Gojo removed, chaos erupts. Jogo force-feeds Yuji ten Sukuna fingers, allowing Sukuna to briefly take control. Sukuna kills Jogo and battles Megumi's uncontrollable shikigami Mahoraga, nearly destroying all of Shibuya in the process. Yuji witnesses Mahito killing his mentor and Gojo's colleague, Kento Nanami, and severely wounding Nobara, breaking him emotionally. With help from Kyoto student Aoi Todo, Yuji defeats Mahito, but Kenjaku absorbs the Curse and awakens countless sorcerers, advancing his millennia-old plan for a new era of Cursed Spirits. The Shibuya Incident showcases the devastating power of Special Grade Curses, as their mere presence threatens to level entire cities and demands the combined might of multiple sorcerers just to stand a chance.
Reader's Guide
Special Grade Curses are the most lethal non-human entities in existence. Unlike standard curses that dissipate upon exorcism, these beings possess self-awareness and often a philosophical drive toward human extinction. Motivations vary—from reclaiming the world for nature (Hanami) to accelerating evolution (Mahito)—but their goal remains consistent: the end of humanity. They are frequently manipulated by ancient sorcerers like Kenjaku into conflicts such as the Shibuya Incident, though Kenjaku himself is a Special Grade Sorcerer, not a curse. The confirmed roster includes Mahito, Jogo, Hanami, and Dagon, alongside the King of Curses, Ryomen Sukuna. Defeating any one requires coordinated efforts from the strongest sorcerers, invariably resulting in catastrophic collateral damage.
