Jaya Bachchan (born Jaya Bhaduri on 9 April 1948) is an Indian actress and politician who has represented the Samajwadi Party in the Rajya Sabha since 2004. She is widely recognised for bringing a naturalistic approach to acting in both mainstream Hindi cinema and the "middle-of-the-road" film movement. Her career honours include ten Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.
She first appeared on screen as a teenager in Satyajit Ray’s *Mahanagar* (1963), and her first adult role came in Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s *Guddi* (1971). Mukherjee became a frequent collaborator, and she earned notice in films such as *Uphaar* (1971), *Koshish* (1972), and *Kora Kagaz* (1974). Throughout the 1970s, she formed a celebrated on-screen partnership with her future husband, Amitabh Bachchan, starring opposite him in hits like *Zanjeer* (1973), *Abhimaan* (1973), *Chupke Chupke* (1975), *Mili* (1975), and the cult classic *Sholay* (1975). She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for *Abhimaan*, *Kora Kagaz*, and *Nauker* (1980 ceremony).
After marrying and having children, she cut back on film work, notably appearing in *Silsila* (1981) before stepping away from acting for 17 years. She returned in Govind Nihalani’s independent drama *Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa* (1998). Following her comeback, she revived her career with character roles, winning three Filmfare Awards for Best Supporting Actress for playing emotionally troubled mothers in the commercially successful films *Fiza* (2001 ceremony), *Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...* (2002 ceremony), and *Kal Ho Naa Ho* (2004 ceremony). After another break, she appeared in Karan Johar’s *Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani* (2023).
Born into a Bengali family in Jabalpur (then in the Central Provinces and Berar, now Madhya Pradesh), she is the daughter of journalist, author, and poet Tarun Kumar Bhaduri and his wife Indira. She has two sisters, Rita and Nita; Nita’s son Kunal Ross is married to actress Tillotama Shome. She attended St. Joseph’s Convent School in Bhopal and Loreto College in Kolkata, and won the Best All-India N.C.C. Cadet Award during the 1966 Republic Day celebrations. She later graduated with a gold medal from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
She married Amitabh Bachchan on 3 June 1973. The couple have two children: Shweta Bachchan and actor Abhishek Bachchan.

She is the daughter of Tarun Kumar Bhaduri, a journalist, author, and poet, and his wife, Indira.
