Okhlobystin was born on 22 July 1966 in the recreation center 'Polenovo' in Tula Oblast, Soviet Union. His father was a military doctor and World War II participant, then 62, and his mother was a 19-year-old student engineer-economist. He studied directing at VGIK alongside future Russian cinema luminaries, was drafted into the army without graduating, served in rocket forces in Rostov-on-Don, then reinstated and graduated in 1992 from Igor Talankin's workshop.

His acting career began with the film 'The Leg' (1991), for which he won a best actor prize under the pseudonym Ivan Chuzhoy. He directed 'Arbiter', which won a Kinotavr award. He wrote the script for the cult film 'Demobbed' (2000) based on his army memories. After a religious conversion, he became a Russian Orthodox priest, but Patriarch Kirill removed him from the priesthood in January 2010, banning him from wearing vestments. He then resumed his entertainment career and became creative director of Euroset.
