The Word Bearers are the 17th Space Marine Legion, led by their Primarch Lorgar. The First Heretic tells how, after the Emperor publicly and humiliatingly censures Lorgar and the assembled Legion, two of Lorgar's most trusted lieutenants, secretly allied with Chaos, sway him, and Primarch and Legion covertly embrace and promote the Primordial Truth many years before Horus's corruption.

Lore & Background

Early in the Heresy the Legion plans and leads the invasion of Ultramar, spearheaded by the secretly commissioned warship Furious Abyss, and the assault on Calth, where Roboute Guilliman and his Ultramarines, unaware of the Word Bearers' true allegiance, are unprepared. With the World Eaters they then lay waste to worlds across Ultramar in the "Shadow Crusade" planned by Lorgar.
