Background

It opens in a world where every human soul takes the form of an animal companion called a daemon. Lyra lives among the scholars of Jordan College, Oxford, in a world ruled by the Magisterium, a religious and political power.

She stumbles on a dangerous secret involving Lord Asriel and Marisa Coulter, and a witches' prophecy says she will change the world. That prophecy also ties her fate to Will Parry, a teenager from our own world who is being hunted by people connected to his long-lost father.

The first series of eight episodes premiered on BBC One on 3 November 2019. The second had seven episodes, and the eight-episode final series premiered on HBO on 5 December 2022. Critics praised the cast, visuals, score and its faithfulness to the books.
