Lore & Background
Creek Audio was started in 1982 by Michael Creek, initially manufacturing integrated amplifiers and tuners from its base in London. Sales grew rapidly, requiring new premises, and the company established overseas markets along with about 80 specialised UK retail customers. However, delivery times lengthened as sales outstripped production, and additional funding was needed to grow the company. In 1988, Creek Audio was sold to Mordaunt-Short, which had itself been bought by the TGI PLC group the previous year.
Under Mordaunt-Short, Creek Audio continued to grow until 1991, when a change in management occurred. TGI appointed a new managing director who jointly managed Tannoy in Scotland, Mordaunt-Short, Creek Audio, and Epos Speakers. Production was split between the two companies, leading to higher manufacturing costs and ultimately making the company unprofitable. It was then offered for sale.
In 1993, a consortium of Creek's overseas distributors from the USA, Switzerland, and Germany joined with founder Mike Creek to buy the brand name back from TGI PLC. Mike Creek became managing director of the new company, Creek Audio Ltd., which began trading that year from the same north London premises Creek had originally occupied. Production was continued by a dedicated group of former Creek employees who had worked at the Mordaunt-Short factory in Horndean, Hampshire.
Reader's Guide
Creek Audio's significance lies in its trajectory from a small London-based manufacturer of integrated amplifiers and tuners to a brand with international reach, followed by a period of corporate ownership and eventual revival by its founder and distributors. The company's rapid early growth, which outstripped production capacity, illustrates the challenges of scaling a niche audio business. Its sale to Mordaunt-Short and subsequent management changes under TGI PLC reflect the broader consolidation in the British hi-fi industry during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The buyback of the brand in 1993 by a consortium including founder Mike Creek and overseas distributors from the USA, Switzerland, and Germany is a notable example of a brand returning to its original leadership. The continuation of production by former employees at the original north London premises underscores the loyalty and expertise that sustained the company through its corporate interlude. Creek Audio's legacy is that of a brand that survived ownership changes and maintained its identity through a return to its founding principles and personnel.
