Lead and character concept

Vox is designed around television and electronic motifs, often appearing with TV screens and broadcast hardware integrated into his design. He runs a media conglomerate called VoxTek that controls broadcasts and influences public opinion in Hell. Narratively, he serves as a foil to more traditional overlords and is frequently read as a satirical embodiment of broadcast power, algorithmic influence, and corporate media control.

Fictional biography

Vox made a cameo in the pilot episode of Hazbin Hotel and appeared more frequently in season 1 as a recurring antagonist. His primary characteristic is his rivalry with Alastor the Radio Demon. After learning of Alastor's resurgence and alliance with Charlie Morningstar, Vox sends Sir Pentious as a spy into the Hazbin Hotel, but Pentious is discovered and chooses redemption. In the season finale, Vox expresses joy at seeing Alastor bested by Adam and later intends to use Hell's victory over Heaven to take control.

In season 2, Vox and the Vees play a more central role as the main antagonists, engaging in widescale media manipulation and political maneuvering to take over both realms. The season reveals Vox's backstory: before becoming a demon, he was a weatherman named Vincent Whittman who committed murders to rise in television, eventually murdering his boss Bob and leading a TV network. He started a television-themed cult and died when a suspended television monitor fell onto his head, electrocuting him and his followers.

It is also revealed that Vox proposed a partnership with Alastor, whose mocking rejection catalyzed their rivalry. Over season 2, Vox's hunger for power creates a rift with the other Vees. In episode 4, Alastor turns himself over to Vox with the condition that Vox not harm Charlie; Vox torments Alastor and declares war on Heaven. In episode 6, Vox kidnaps Angel Dust, revealing he had hypnotized him to spy on the hotel.

Reception

By season 2, entertainment journalists observed that the Vees and their leader Vox had become a major focus. Reviews highlighted the Vees' takeover scheme as key to raising the season's stakes, with Vox’s role frequently mentioned in summaries of the main conflicts. Coverage from People and Decider described the longer seasons as centered on overlord politics, pointing to Vox’s plans as the engine for season 2’s key story developments.
