Development
The project began as a fan-made clone of Grand Theft Auto for the Amiga. The author stated that every effort was made to ensure Payback beats GTA in every way. It later became a commercial release, and in 2002 Apex Designs announced plans to bring it to Microsoft Windows, Macintosh, and the Game Boy Advance. The Mac version was released speedily, but the Windows version's release date remains unannounced. A GP2X handheld version appeared in 2006. Despite copying car names such as the Mundaneo from GTA, Rockstar did not attempt to stop publication. The GBA version was finished but initially lacked a publisher; DSI Games picked it up in late 2004. The GBA version received an ESRB age rating but did not officially release in North America.
