Hatori and Ayame's Backstories

Lore & Background

Two years before the series began, Hatori was engaged to Kana Sohma, the assistant in his doctor's office. When he asked Akito for permission to marry her, Akito attacked him, leaving him almost blind in his left eye, and then blamed Kana; she felt so guilty that Hatori suppressed her memory of their relationship. Ayame, Yuki's older brother, completely ignored Yuki when they were young and once even forgot his name; in high school he was president of the student council.

Reader's Guide

During the series Ayame realizes that when they are older he will be completely alone, with only Yuki for company, and he tries to win his brother's love, first by demanding it and later in more thoughtful ways; Yuki gradually accepts him as a brother. After Kana marries someone else, Shigure manipulates Hatori into meeting her best friend, Mayuko Shiraki, and in the last chapter Hatori invites Mayuko on an Okinawa vacation. When Ayame is freed from the curse, the first thing he does is embrace his seamstress, Mine Kuramae, and confess that he loves her.
