Momiji Sohma
The Rabbit of the zodiac, who hides a sad family life behind a sunny smile.
Momiji Sohma is the Rabbit of the Chinese zodiac in Fruits Basket. His father, one of the richest members of the Sohma family, is Japanese, and his mother is German. He is depicted as a cute, cheerful, androgynous boy who hides a sad family life behind his sunny demeanor.
Lore & Background
Momiji's mother learned of the curse when she first held him and was repulsed; she finally begged Hatori to erase her memories of him. Because of this his younger sister, Momo, does not know that he is her brother. He lives alone inside the Sohma family compound and was raised by servants. In chapter 115 his curse is broken before the rest of the zodiac's.
Reader's Guide
Momiji is older than he looks: Tohru is surprised to learn that he is only a year younger than she is. He takes to Tohru quickly, sometimes helps at her evening job as an office cleaner in one of his father's buildings, and even defies Akito to protect her. His name comes from momijitsuki, the ninth month of the traditional Japanese calendar; according to the author she mixed up his and Kureno's positions, so he is not named after the month of the Rabbit.
