Reader's Guide
The Cat and Rat Legend is essential to understanding the emotional weight carried by Kyo Sohma throughout the series. It establishes why he feels fundamentally different from the other cursed members who represent the standard twelve signs. In this myth, the Rat tricked the Cat into missing the induction feast. The Cat's absence meant only twelve animals were chosen to serve as companions. This historical exclusion is woven directly into the Sohma family structure. For Kyo, being the Cat means he was never truly invited into the inner circle of the Zodiacs in the same way others were. It explains his deep-seated fear of abandonment and his struggle for belonging within a family that views him as an anomaly. In the end the curse breaks with Tohru's acceptance of the cat, the first friend of the god of the zodiac.
