Imping
Ancient technique for repairing broken bird feathers.
Imping is a technique for repairing a bird’s broken feather by replacing it with a donor feather. The donor can come from a previous molt of the same bird or from another bird, either of the same species or a different one. The practice is most common with birds of prey, especially falcons in falconry, but it is also used on seabirds, corvids, and other species in rehabilitation centers. Because feathers are dead structures made of keratin—the same material as human hair and nails—the procedure causes no pain.
Imping only works on feathers that are partially broken or damaged, not on those that have fallen out entirely. It is limited to flight feathers on the wing and tail feathers (rectrices). It cannot be performed on blood feathers, which are still developing and contain a blood supply; they must be fully grown and bloodless first.
The repair involves inserting a small imping needle into the hollow shaft of both the remaining feather stump and the replacement feather, then securing them with adhesive. Historically, needles were made of bamboo or metal, and rust served as the bonding agent. Today, fiberglass or graphite needles are common, and epoxy is used as the adhesive. Over time, the imped feather will molt out naturally, and a new feather will grow in its place. This technique can help a wild bird avoid a long stay in care while waiting for a new feather to grow. However, it requires precision and skill: a poorly placed imped feather can cause bruising and irritation, and after release it may hinder the bird’s ability to survive.
