Feather pecking is a behavior observed most frequently among domestic hens reared for egg production, though it also occurs in other poultry such as pheasants, turkeys, ducks, broiler chickens, and occasionally farmed ostriches. It involves one bird repeatedly pecking at the feathers of another, with severity ranging from mild investigatory pecking to severe pecking that can cause pain, skin trauma, bleeding, cannibalism, and death. This behavior is a major welfare and economic problem for the egg industry, particularly in non-cage systems, and is expected to become more pressing following EU legislation banning barren battery cages.

Captive birds in barren environments with limited foraging opportunities and nutrient-dense diets consume food in minutes rather than hours, redirecting foraging activity to the feathers of conspecifics. It is not aggression; aggressive pecking targets the head or comb, while feather pecking targets the base of the tail, uropygial gland, back, tail, and wing feathers. Feather pecking is also distinct from feather-plucking, where isolated birds remove their own feathers.
