Para tertiary butylphenol formaldehyde resin (PTBP-FR) is a thermoplastic material derived from phenol and formaldehyde, specifically using p-tert-butylphenol as the phenol component. It is a resol-type resin, produced under basic conditions with an excess of formaldehyde, and consists of a mixture of oligomers where the repeating unit −CH2C6H2(OH)(t-Bu)CH2O− is more common than −CH2C6H2(OH)(t-Bu)−. Unlike other resols, it does not cross-link when cured because the positions on the phenol ring opposite the hydroxyl group are already occupied by tert-butyl groups.

Most dermatitis cases stem from contact with items such as shoes, watchbands, belts, wet suits, handbags, wallets, hats, fabric glues, furniture and upholstery glues, wood glues, waterproof glues, rubber-handled tools, dental bonding resins, box adhesives, disposable diapers, lip liner, and rubber athletic insoles. As of 2002, about half of all cases were linked to occupational exposure. While PTBP-FR is used across many industries and products, its role in shoe manufacturing is most frequently associated with contact dermatitis cases.
