Background

As Dune begins, the "old crone" Reverend Mother Mohiam comes to Caladan to test young Paul Atreides before he departs for Arrakis. She holds the title of Imperial Truthsayer, a role that signals the Emperor's direct involvement in affairs. Her primary focus is the Bene Gesserit breeding scheme, which she manages with absolute authority. When Lady Jessica, her former student on Wallach IX, disobeys orders to bear a daughter and instead gives birth to Paul Atreides, Mohiam views this as a catastrophic deviation.
