Qwerty effect
A small, disputed statistical link between keyboard side and word valence.
The QWERTY effect is a suggested psycholinguistic pattern where the placement of letters on a QWERTY keyboard shows a statistical link to the emotional tone, or valence, of the words those letters form. As first proposed, words with more letters typed on the keyboard’s right side were rated slightly more positively than those with more left-side letters. Researchers have explored this through experiments involving word ratings, made-up words, personal names, online reviews, and consumer ratings. While some studies have found supporting evidence, others have detected little to no effect. As a result, the QWERTY effect is generally seen as a minor and debated statistical trend, not proof that keyboards directly shape word meanings.
To measure this, most studies split the alphabet based on which side of a standard QWERTY keyboard each letter sits on. Left-side letters are Q, W, E, R, T, A, S, D, F, G, Z, X, C, V, and B. Right-side letters are Y, U, I, O, P, H, J, K, L, N, and M. A common metric is the right-side advantage, calculated by subtracting the number of left-side letters in a word from the number of right-side letters. For instance, "milk" has four right-side letters, giving it a score of +4, while "tree" has four left-side letters, scoring -4. These scores only describe letter positions, not whether a word is perceived positively. Another measure, the right-side ratio, uses the proportion of right-side letters to total letters, accounting for word length.
Researchers have linked the QWERTY effect to embodied cognition, the idea that physical actions can influence abstract thought. Typing a word is a physical act, and repeated experiences with that act might become tied to how the word is judged. One proposed explanation is processing fluency: actions that are easier or more comfortable to perform are often evaluated more positively. Differences in ease, speed, or familiarity of typing certain letter combinations could affect word judgments. Another explanation involves learned associations between physical space and emotional value. Since most people are right-handed, researchers initially thought the right side might have stronger positive associations for right-handed typists. However, later experiments found similar right-side preferences in both right-handed and left-handed participants, ruling out a simple dominant-hand explanation.

Research on personal names has produced conflicting results: one analysis of U.S. baby-name records from 1960 through 2012 reported that the average right-side advantage of names increased over time, while a separate study of the 1,000 most common names between 1880 and 2010 found no meaningful relationship between a name's right-side advantage and its popularity. The effect may be more difficult to define in languages like Japanese, where users commonly type phonetic spellings using the Latin alphabet and then convert them into kana or kanji; a 2022 study initially found no QWERTY effect in a Japanese word-valence dataset, and combining it with three additional datasets produced a small overall association that was considered too weak and statistically uncertain to be reliable. Overall, the QWERTY effect is treated as a small and disputed statistical tendency rather than proof that keyboards directly determine the meanings of words.
