A foghorn, also known as a fog signal, is a sound-based device that warns vehicles about navigational dangers—like rocky shores or other ships—during foggy weather. The term is primarily used in marine contexts. When lighthouses and other visual aids are hidden by fog, foghorns offer an audible alert for hazards such as rock outcrops, shoals, headlands, and other threats to shipping.
All foghorns produce sound through a vibrating column of air, but they create that vibration in different ways. Some, like the Daboll trumpet, use vibrating plates or metal reeds, similar to a modern electric car horn. Others force air through holes in a rotating cylinder or disk, much like a siren. Semi-automatic operation was achieved with a clockwork mechanism, or "coder," that opened valves in sequence to admit air to the horns; each horn had its own timing pattern to help sailors identify it.

Clockwork systems also automated bell striking. Struck bells evolved through the 1800s with the use of a governor, including a large triangle with 4-foot sides in Maine in 1837. Ships were required to carry bells, though Turkish ships were exempt because Islam forbade their use.

In the United Kingdom, experiments were carried out by John Tyndall and Lord Rayleigh. Rayleigh's research for Trinity House culminated in a siren with a large trumpet installed at Trevose Head Lighthouse, Cornwall in 1913. One reporter described its sound as having 'a screech like an army of panthers, weird and prolonged, gradually lowering in note until after half a minute it becomes the roar of a thousand mad bulls.' From the early 20th century, the diaphone—originally invented as an organ stop by Robert Hope-Jones and developed as a fog signal by John Northey of Toronto—became the standard foghorn apparatus for new installations worldwide, powered by compressed air and capable of extremely powerful low-frequency notes.
