Red Dog (beer)

Red Dog was a beer from the Miller Brewing Company, sold under the revived Plank Road Brewery name—Frederick Miller’s original 19th-century brewhouse. Introduced in 1994, it was brewed with two barley malts and five American hop varieties, and contained 4.8% alcohol by volume. The Plank Road label was brought back in the 1990s to market Red Dog and Icehouse as more premium offerings, keeping them separate from the Miller brand. The beer was priced between Miller High Life and Milwaukee’s Best. Popular through the mid-to-late 1990s, it faded into near-obscurity after 2000. Production ended at the close of February 2021, when Molson Coors discontinued it.

For advertising, the brand used the slogan “Be Your Own Dog.” A series of TV commercials featured a live bulldog with an inner monologue voiced by Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones, created by Michael McLaughlin and Stephen Creet at BBDO, Toronto. The bulldog logo also sparked a 1990s urban legend: viewers claimed that flipping the logo upside down revealed a hidden, sexually explicit image of Batman. In motorsport, Red Dog was the primary sponsor for NASCAR Busch Series driver Kenny Wallace from 1994 to 1996.

Lore & Background

Red Dog was introduced in 1994 and brewed with two barley malts and five varieties of American hops. It was part of the Plank Road Brewery Family, a name resurrected from Frederick Miller's first brewhouse in the 19th century. The Plank Road name was used in the 1990s to sell Icehouse and Red Dog as more premium beers under a different label, so as not to directly associate them with Miller Brewing. The beer was found in stores at a price segment between Miller High Life and Milwaukee's Best.

For its television advertising, the brand used the slogan 'Be your own dog' in a series of popular commercials featuring a live bulldog whose inner monologue was voiced by Academy Award-winning actor Tommy Lee Jones. The ad campaign came from the creative team of Michael McLaughlin and Stephen Creet at BBDO, Toronto. Although popular during the mid-to-late 1990s, Red Dog faded into near-obscurity after the turn of the 21st century. At the end of February 2021, Molson Coors ended production of Red Dog beer.

The distinct bulldog logo also became the subject of a widespread 1990s urban legend, with consumers claiming that viewing the logo upside down revealed a hidden, sexually explicit image of Batman.

Reader's Guide

Red Dog's significance lies in its role as a mid-1990s premium lager marketed under the revived Plank Road Brewery name, a strategy that allowed Miller Brewing to position the brand apart from its mainstream labels. The beer achieved notable cultural visibility through its advertising campaign, which featured Tommy Lee Jones voicing the inner monologue of a bulldog, and through its sponsorship of Kenny Wallace in the NASCAR Busch Series from 1994 to 1996. The brand's tagline 'Be your own dog' and its bulldog logo became widely recognized, with the logo itself spawning a persistent urban legend about a hidden image. Despite its popularity during the mid-to-late 1990s, Red Dog declined after the turn of the century and was ultimately discontinued by Molson Coors at the end of February 2021. Its legacy is tied to a specific era of beer marketing and the use of a separate brand identity to appeal to a more premium segment.
