Octave Chanute

Octave Chanute (February 18, 1832 – November 23, 1910) was a French-American civil engineer and aviation pioneer. He guided and promoted many flight enthusiasts, most notably the Wright brothers, and at his death was called the father of aviation and the originator of heavier-than-air flying machine concepts.

Born in Paris to Elise and Joseph Chanute, a professor at the Collège de France, he and his father moved to the United States in 1838 when Joseph became Vice President of Jefferson College in Louisiana. After settling in New York City, Octave attended private schools. He married Anne Riddell James in 1857, and they had one son and three daughters.

Chanute began training as a civil engineer in 1848 and was regarded as brilliant and innovative. He served as chief engineer for the Chicago Union Stock Yards (completed 1865) and consulted for the Kansas City Stock Yards Company (1871), and with Joseph Tomlinson and George S. Morison, designed the Hannibal Bridge (1869), the first to cross the Missouri River, making Kansas City the region’s dominant city. He also engineered many other railroad bridges, including spans over the Illinois River at Peoria and Chillicothe, the Genesee River Gorge near Portageville, New York, the Sibley Railroad Bridge in Missouri, the Fort Madison Toll Bridge in Iowa, and the Kinzua Bridge in Pennsylvania.

He pioneered wood preservation by developing a pressure-treatment process using antiseptic to extend the life of railroad ties. He established the first commercial treatment plants and convinced railroad executives that spending on treated ties reduced long-term replacement costs. Chanute retired from the Erie Railway in 1883 to work as an independent engineering consultant.

His interest in aviation began after watching a balloon ascent in Peoria, Illinois, in 1856. After retiring, he applied his engineering expertise to the field, gathering data from flight experimenters worldwide and combining it with his civil engineering knowledge.
