Lore & Background

The team's history was rooted in their survival of the Hundred Year War, but this chapter began with Aang gathering relics and restoring the Southern Air Temple. Their bond faced immediate strain when they encountered Tagah, who expressed prejudice toward other bending nations despite sharing a vision for restored Air Nomads. Trust eroded further during a stormy journey to a hidden island where Tagah nearly killed members of the extremist group known as the Denied by crushing their ship. Katara's distrust grew as Tagah's methods became increasingly ruthless, leading her to plead with Aang to abandon the pursuit of an ancient staff. The lore deepened when Tagah revealed his true intentions to create an Air empire, attacking and killing the entire group before stealing Appa and the staff, leaving only their spirits and a resurrected Katara to face him.

In Their Own Story

The story turned on Mount Baihu, where Aang discovered and revived Tagah, an airbender from Avatar Sonam's time. Together with Sokka, Katara, Toph, and Zuko, they traveled on Zuko's airship toward a hidden island. When the Denied attacked amidst a storm, Aang and Tagah cleared a path, but Tagah's brutality nearly killed their enemies, alarming Katara. Upon reaching the island, Aang retrieved an ancient staff while Tagah confronted Katara, revealing his plan to dominate other nations with an Air empire. Tagah killed the group, including Aang, before stealing Appa and the staff. In an alternate realm, Sonam's spirit explained that Tagah had betrayed her centuries ago after being consumed by trauma from the Air Nomad slaughter. After Katara was resurrected by spirit water, Aang summoned the Ocean Spirit to enter the Spirit World. There, they found Republic City under siege as Tagah pulled Sonam's temple down. Aang confronted Tagah, briefly succumbing to a corrupted Avatar State before memories of Monk Gyatso restored his resolve. Instead of delivering a fatal blow, Aang destroyed the staff, stripping the Denied of their power and causing Tagah and the temple to fade away.

Reader's Guide

The group's objective evolved from restoring balance to preventing a new tyranny. Key members included Aang (Avatar), Katara (Water Tribe representative), Sokka (Southern Water Tribe warrior), Toph (Earth Kingdom metalbending instructor), and Zuko (Fire Lord). They were joined by Tagah, an ancient airbender who initially appeared as an ally but proved to be the antagonist. The team utilized Zuko's airship for travel and relied on Appa and Momo for support. Their strategy involved retrieving a legendary staff capable of granting airbending to non-benders, a plan that failed when Tagah weaponized it. Guidance came from past Avatars like Xian and Sonam, who revealed the history of the staff and Tagah's betrayal. The group sought aid from the spirit Gorillavark in the Spirit World to return to Republic City. Ultimately, their victory relied not on force but on Aang's choice to destroy the staff, forgiving Tagah and himself, which allowed them to welcome new Air Acolytes and discover a surviving herd of sky bison.
