Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Search is a three-part graphic novel from 2013, written by Gene Yang with art by Studio Gurihiru. It picks up after the events of the earlier graphic novel Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Promise and comes before the sequel Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Rift. The story continues the narrative of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender and acts as a prequel to The Legend of Korra, both shows created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.
The plot centers on the mystery of Ursa, the long-lost mother of Zuko and Azula. It reveals how former Princess Azula is imprisoned in a Fire Nation mental institution and explores the complicated relationship between Fire Lord Ozai and Ursa. In Part One, two mysterious figures talk, with one wanting to learn everything the other knows. In the past, Ursa accepts a marriage proposal from her boyfriend Ikem, an actor in the Fire Nation town of Hira'a, but is soon forced to marry Prince Ozai. She lies to Ikem about willingly accepting Ozai's proposal to prevent Ozai from killing him. At the wedding, Ozai forbids Ursa from contacting her old family or acquaintances. In the present, Zuko hears a saying that a ruler who handles their family well can handle their nation. He brings Azula to Ozai's cell to encourage them to talk. Azula, now insane, believes Ursa is working against her and is responsible for her defeat. Acting on Ozai's information, Azula escapes, leads Zuko to a secret chamber, and burns letters Ursa wrote. She offers to tell Zuko their contents if he lets her join his search for Ursa. Zuko agrees reluctantly and convinces Aang, Katara, and Sokka to travel with him to keep Azula in check. They head to Hira'a. Near the end of the journey, Azula tries to flee but hallucinates her mother, telling the vision she has evidence to overthrow Zuko and intends to kill Ursa. Katara restrains her, but a giant wolf spirit attacks. Azula convinces Zuko to free her, and she lures the spirit away with lightning. That night, Zuko finds Azula's evidence: a letter from Ursa to Ikem claiming Zuko is actually Ikem's son.
