A century of conquest fueled by a comet's power and a drive for empire.

Fire Nation Imperialism describes the aggressive expansionist campaign launched by Fire Lord Sozin roughly one hundred years before the series begins. This conflict, known as the Hundred Year War, was driven by a desire to expand the nation's empire and conquer the other three nations. The war began with a calculated genocide against the Air Nomads, timed perfectly with the arrival of a comet that granted firebenders tremendous power. Over the next century, the Fire Nation waged total war against the Water Tribes and the Earth Kingdom, seeking global dominance before Fire Lord Ozai's eventual defeat in July 2008.

The conflict began when Fire Lord Sozin launched a world war to expand his nation's empire. Knowing the Avatar must be an Air Nomad, he and his army carried out a genocide against the Air Nomads, eliminating all survivors except Aang. This act severed the world from its global peacekeeper for one hundred years. The war expanded rapidly as the Fire Nation attacked the Southern Water Tribe through systematic raids that hunted down benders. In the Earth Kingdom, the nation faced constant invasion until Ba Sing Se fell to a coup d'état instigated by Princess Azula. The Fire Nation's military might was bolstered by industrialization and the strategic use of Sozin's Comet, which provided firebenders with immense power during key assaults.
