Gameplay
Players can switch between a first-person view and an overhead drone perspective. From the sky, they command their squad to find cover, toss frag grenades, fire, and secure objectives, introducing strategic gameplay that emphasizes positioning and map awareness. The game uses touch screens, allowing control via simple gestures. In first-person view, the left and right sides of the screen act as virtual analog sticks for movement. Quick aim is enabled by small arrows at the bottom of the screen that switch the aiming reticule to the closest target. The story is set in the Black Ops arc in 2020, with players leading a U.S. Joint Special Operations Team after the country finds itself at war with an unknown enemy. The single-player campaign consists of objective-based missions where players control strike teams sent to retrieve intel, eliminate targets, or take control of areas. Between missions, players can switch gear and weapons or upgrade perks, which grant enhancements. Perks are upgraded using in-game currency earned through missions or via in-app purchases. The game has no multiplayer mode. The campaign includes 16 missions across three different locations. Survival Mode functions similarly to Modern Warfare 3's Survival Mode, where players fight infinite waves of AI enemies on three included maps, with more available for purchase. Difficulty increases with each wave, and completing a wave rewards XP based on performance, used to buy ammunition or upgraded weapons and armor. A free update on November 21, 2013, added Time Attack mode for purchasers. In this mode, players fight AI enemies on any available map while a clock counts down; killing enemies adds time, and the goal is to survive as long as possible while earning tokens.
