Plot

After a vacation at Dragon Shores, Spyro and his friends return home, and Spyro prepares for magic training at the Dragon Temple. While he sleeps on the beach, a dark storm traps everyone in the Dragon Realms, Avalar, and the Forgotten Realms inside a dimension called the Shadow Realm. Elder Tomas gives Spyro the Shadowstone, and Spyro begins learning dragon-kata and magic to rescue those trapped and uncover the Shadow Realm's secrets. Red, the villain from Spyro: A Hero's Tail, reappears and fights Spyro but loses quickly. Red reveals he was a pawn of the Sorcerer, a purple demonic dragon wizard who created the Shadow Realm. Red reforms and helps Spyro. Spyro reaches the Sorcerer's lair and battles the Sorcerer, a four-winged purple dragon. Spyro wins, but the Sorcerer escapes before losing all power. Spyro returns to the Dragon Realms, where a parade honors him. Red apologizes to the Elder dragons, and all except Titan accept him. Spyro and the Elders prepare for the Sorcerer's return, and the Sorcerer is seen flying away, with text indicating the dragons will be ready and waiting.

Gameplay

Defeating enemies and completing quests grants experience points. Accumulating enough experience points causes the player to level up, which allows a return to the Dragon Temple to learn two new skills. Side quests offer additional experience points. The game uses Nintendo DS features, such as drawing symbols on the touchpad with the stylus to cast spells. Many hidden areas exist for the player to discover.
