History
After Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Activision sought to sell a Call of Duty game in China but faced cost and distribution law challenges. In 2011, Activision partnered with Tencent to create an exclusive Chinese title. Early development and beta testing were handled by Activision's Shanghai studio, but development shifted to Raven Software after the 2015 official launch. Tencent shut down the game servers on August 31, 2021.
Overview
The game included multiplayer modes similar to earlier series entries, along with single-player 'Hero Ops' missions, a cooperative survival mode, and a 'Cyborgs' mode that replaced the zombie-survival mode due to Chinese censorship laws. Players could purchase or rent cosmetics for their avatars. Post-launch updates added weapons and features from newer franchise installments.
