Gameplay

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is a World War II first-person shooter featuring both a single-player campaign and a multiplayer mode. The campaign follows soldier Roland Roger, a member of the American 1st Infantry Division. Players can crouch, go prone, and climb over low walls. They can carry two firearms at a time, swapping them for weapons found on the ground, plus fragmentation and smoke grenades. Using iron sights improves accuracy. A compass on the heads-up display marks the locations of allies, enemies, and objectives, which may be places to reach, defend, or enemy guns and tanks to destroy with planted explosives. Some levels offer emplaced machine guns or flak cannons. Other missions put the player inside a tank. In one mission, the player controls Roger's brother "Stretch," a B-24 Liberator crewman who acts as a bombardier and gunner.

Reception

Critics generally gave Big Red One positive marks, according to Metacritic. The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences honored it with an award for story and character development at the 9th Annual Interactive Achievement Awards. In the UK, the PlayStation 2 version sold at least 300,000 copies, earning a Platinum sales award from ELSPA.
