Despite his initial loyalty, the psychological scars of Barbarus could not be fully healed. The Traitor Primarch Horus Laerius manipulated these wounds during the Horus Heresy, driving Angron into a state of uncontrollable berserk fury that culminated in the Battle of Isstvan V. There, he slaughtered billions of loyalist troops and his own sons without mercy. Following the heresy's outbreak, Angron fully embraced Khorne, becoming a Daemon Primarch known as the Butcher of Mars. He now leads the Bloodthirsters and Iron Warriors in an eternal crusade of slaughter across the galaxy.

In Their Own Story

The air on Isstvan V smelled of ozone and burning flesh. Angron stood amidst the carnage, his crimson armor slick with the blood of traitors and loyalists alike. The Red Thirst pulsed within his neck, a rhythmic drumbeat demanding more violence. He did not see faces, only targets; he did not hear screams, only the call to kill. In his hands, the power axe swung in a blur, cleaving through ceramite as if it were wet paper. There was no strategy here, only the pure, unadulterated ecstasy of the hunt. As another legionnaire fell, a grin tore across Angron's face, not born of triumph, but of a hunger that could never be sated.

Angron originated on Barbarus as a gladiator slave, forced to kill by the Red Thirst implant which suppressed his pain and fueled his rage. He was rescued by the Emperor during the Great Crusade and became the Primarch of the Iron Warriors, leading them with a focus on siege warfare and brutal efficiency. His allegiance shifted dramatically during the Horus Heresy when the psychological trauma of his past was exploited by Horus. This betrayal led to the massacre at Isstvan V, where he slaughtered loyalist forces indiscriminately before fully succumbing to Chaos. Key feats include his dominance as a gladiator on Barbarus and his role in the destruction of the loyalist fleets during the Heresy. He is now a central figure among the Chaos Gods, specifically serving Khorne as a Daemon Primarch, leading endless wars of attrition.
