Gameplay

The game was to feature in-depth fire-fights with player-formed squads, cover, and flanking mechanics. Battles of epic proportions were promised, with controllable vehicles that could be multifunctional and some able to sport multiple pilots. Set in the 41st millennium after the Horus Heresy, all races important to that period were to be represented, though only the Imperium of Man was announced as playable. There would be no non-combat classes, as that would not fit the background. Players could customize their character's visual appearance with ranged and melee weapons, armor, books, scrolls, and chains. The scope extended beyond battlefields to include cities of all scales, exotic alien temples, Chaos shrines, deserted battlefields, mysterious ruins, ancient structures, and drifting hulks in space, populated with non-player characters.

Development

Originally announced in March 2007, further information and a teaser trailer were released at E3 2010. Initially planned as a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, Vigil Games later dropped the MMO components to focus on a single-player game with traditional multiplayer. On December 19, 2012, THQ filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, bringing the game's fate into question. The MMO aspect ended in March 2012, but cancellation of the whole project was not definitively answered. The game was later retooled into a cooperative game with the working title Inquisitor, but that project too was abandoned.
