Gameplay

The game uses a top-down camera and emphasizes melee and ranged action, with a leveling system and multiple character classes. It has been frequently compared to Diablo. A cover system is present for both players and enemies, and environments are destructible. The game supports solo and co-op play. The four classes are the Psyker, Crusader, Assassin, and Tech-Adept (expansion only).

Plot

The player character is an Inquisitor in the Caligari Sector, a region created by NeocoreGames. The story begins when an abandoned battleship, the Martyr, appears in the sector. The Inquisitor's transport is shot down by the ship's defenses, forcing a crash landing. Investigation reveals the Martyr is a Fortress Monastery that vanished 5,000 years ago, commanded by Lord Inquisitor Uther Tiberius. The Inquisitor meets Adeptus Astartes Caius Thorn, who claims to be led by Lord Inquisitor Klosterheim and that his expedition became stranded after the Martyr activated a jamming signal. After disabling the signal, Thorn is wounded and the Martyr's warp drives activate, causing the Inquisitor to teleport off as the ship enters the Warp. The Inquisitor seeks to save Thorn to learn how to track the Martyr. Traveling to the Merciful Agony Void Station and then to Kardian II, the Inquisitor rescues Artificer Omicron Arkh, who locates Klosterheim still aboard the Martyr. Confronting Klosterheim reveals that the Inquisitor was Klosterheim's former superior who ordered him to secure the Martyr and find the Alpha Pariah, a being that is Uther Tiberius' greatest secret. To avoid censure, the Inquisitor voluntarily wiped their own memories.

Prophecy (expansion)

Prophecy, a stand-alone expansion, released on July 30, 2019 on PC and on February 13, 2020 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It introduced the Tech-Adept Inquisitor class, which summons and controls robotic constructs. The expansion continued the original campaign with additional chapters, new missions, enemies, and environments. Critics praised the new class but noted some repetitive mission design. Reception was generally positive to mixed.

Reception

The game received mixed reviews upon release. Reviewers praised its atmosphere and detailed environments but criticized repetitive missions, technical performance issues, and pacing problems. IGN described it as a faithful but uneven translation of the setting, noting strong customization but lack of mission variety. PC Gamer commented that the combat needs polishing and called the campaign a grind-heavy test of patience.
