Campaign
A year after the Tyranid invasion of sub-sector Aurelia was defeated, along with the Ork and Eldar forces, the Blood Ravens return in Chaos Rising. The campaign brings back the heroes from the previous game, as well as Chaos Lord Eliphas from Dark Crusade, the new governor of Meridian named Derosa, and the heretic Vandis. A new feature is the Corruption System. During missions, players often have multiple objectives to complete; the choice of which objective to finish determines how corrupted their Marines become. Corruption measures how close the Force Commander, Jonah Orion, and all squads under the player’s command (except for Davian Thule, who is immune) are to turning to Chaos and betraying the Imperium. This deliberate gameplay choice affects both the ending and which missions are available. Two new environments join the existing three: the jungle and swamp of Typhon, the deserts and canyons of Calderis, and the Gothic city-scape of Meridian. The Force Commander and his strike force, now aboard the newly requisitioned Strike Cruiser Retribution (replacing the Armageddon, which was destroyed over Typhon Primaris), arrive on Aurelia after receiving a distress signal encoded for the Blood Ravens. This signal is a trap, and they are ambushed by traitor Guardsmen from House Vandis, the militia of the former governor. After escaping, the Force Commander and Dreadnought Davian Thule move to rescue Librarian Jonah Orion, who is under attack by Eldar forces that have uncovered ancient ruins and revived Wraithguards.
