Synopsis

On the Imperial world of Tarnis, the fortress of House Drakkus, known as Fort Drakkus, comes under assault from Chaos Space Marines. During the attack, a lone Imperial Knight named Vortigan, though the player may choose a different name, undergoes his knighting ceremony. The Sacristan Lucius orders him to join his fellow Knights. In the ensuing battle, Vortigan witnesses the deaths of his brothers and uncle, all Imperial Knights, as both Fort Drakkus and House Drakkus are destroyed. He is rescued by a detachment of the Dark Angels Space Marine chapter. With no House to belong to, he becomes a mercenary, a role known as a Freeblade. Brought aboard the Dark Angels strike cruiser the Fist of Caliban, Vortigan chooses to serve the chapter. His first mission involves reclaiming several cities and strategic locations, including a communications array, from an Ork invasion. While attacking an Ork-held city, Chaos forces launch further assaults on the planet. Vortigan attacks the city, now retaken by Chaos, but is reprimanded and ordered to secure a vital anti-air installation, which he does. Later, he assaults an Ork-held fort, forcing the Ork commander Nekkruncha to flee. A mysterious figure then contacts Vortigan and the Dark Angels, directing them to a contested city the Chaos forces are desperate to capture. The city contains a fragment of a Chaos starship that crashed in a nearby forest. Vortigan investigates, fighting through Chaos illusions and troops, and meets the figure: Altorus, the Iron Warden of Tarnis. Altorus explains that the Chaos forces seek eight marks of the Chaos god Khorne to summon Felfurion, a Greater Daemon of Khorne, and several marks have already been obtained. Before that, Vortigan and Altorus must capture another Ork city to destroy teleporters the Orks are using to defeat Imperial forces. Afterward, Altorus leaves to prevent Felfurion’s summoning while Vortigan hunts down and kills Nekkruncha, ending the Ork threat.
