Gameplay
Warhammer 40,000: Storm of Vengeance is a lane-based strategy game. Players place five buildings on their side of the map to produce resources and units called cards. The objective is to capture three enemy lanes by killing enemy units and destroying enemy buildings at the end of each lane. Between levels, players can upgrade units, granting new weapons and abilities but increasing costs. Both the Dark Angels and the Bad Moons have their own campaigns and are playable in skirmish and multiplayer matches. Each faction uses two resources: the Dark Angels use redemption for basic units and resolve for Dreadnaughts, Ravenwings, and abilities; the Orks use teef for all units and warp for special abilities from the Weirdboy Tower.
Setting
On the war-torn planet Piscina IV, the Imperium’s Grand Master Belial clashes with Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Thraka. This conflict unfolds within the grim Warhammer 40,000 setting, where humanity’s galaxy-spanning empire, ruled by the immortal Emperor, endlessly battles Orks, other xenos, and Chaos.
Reception
The iOS version received mixed reviews, while the PC version received unfavorable reviews on Metacritic. Eurogamer criticized the PC version for a complete lack of AI, noting that units are compelled to keep moving forward even past enemies in a shuffling conga line, and described the game as about watching construction bars fill up and health bars go down repeatedly. Eurogamer summarized it as a small and fussy game that takes its gameplay wholesale from Eutechnyx's 2013 iOS game Ninja Cats vs Samurai Dogs. AppSpy stated the iOS version was repetitive but engaging enough as a tower defense game that makes fair use of its 40K licence, praising its huge range of technology trees but noting long-winded tutorials. The review summarized that intuitive controls may be undermined on small screens, but the complexity and flexibility they allow make a fair compromise, while acknowledging it is a reskin of the developer's previous game. Pocket Gamer stated that if expecting an accurate digital conversion or loving tribute to Warhammer 40,000, the reader is out of luck, and if after a satisfyingly meaty strategy game, the reader is also out of luck. The reviewer noted variation from commander abilities and melee class abilities to rocket between lanes, but found gameplay constrained by the compact nature of battles, summarizing the iOS version as a bit of a grind to play for more than an hour or so.
