Reception
Critics widely celebrated Space Crusade for how closely it captured the spirit of the original board game. The ZX Spectrum release earned the 24th spot in the Your Sinclair Readers' Top 100 Games of All Time. CU Amiga described it as a classic strategy game, while Amiga Computing called it one hell of a game. The Amiga Action reviewer had no reservations recommending it to everyone, especially commanders familiar with the Adeptus Astartes. A writer for The One for Amiga Games noted that the positives far outweigh the negatives, making it a very worthwhile purchase, particularly with the promise of numerous data disks to expand the experience. That same reviewer observed that the computer version keeps the board game's feel while adding effects that would be nearly impossible to replicate physically, short of dousing miniatures in lighter fluid and setting them ablaze when destroyed. Amiga Format characterized the game as fun, but not the fast-paced joystick-bashing kind; instead, it offers thoughtful, tactical wargaming with some mindless blasting mixed in. Finally, the Amiga Mania reviewer highlighted the many nice effects, touches, and tweaks that elevate a great game above its competition.
Expansion
In 1992, the Amiga and Atari ST received Space Crusade: The Voyage Beyond, an expansion pack for the original Space Crusade. It introduced ten additional levels. Around the same time, a bundle combining the main game and this expansion was also released. Critics responded well; CU Amiga gave a positive review. Amiga Power described it as "definitely quality stuff and well up to the original's standards." The One Amiga called it "a simplistic but fun RPG that is never less than engrossing," while Amiga Format noted that "The Voyage Beyond expands upon a good strategy game."
