Theta Ophiuchi
A triple star system with a Beta Cephei variable primary.
Theta Ophiuchi (θ Ophiuchi) is a multiple star system located in the equatorial constellation of Ophiuchus, on the 'right foot' of the serpent-bearer, just southwest of Kepler's Star, the nova of 1604. With an apparent visual magnitude of +3.3, it is readily visible to the naked eye and lies roughly 436 light-years from Earth based on Hipparcos parallax measurements. The system is notable as a proper motion member of the Upper Scorpius sub-group in the Scorpius–Centaurus OB association, the nearest co-moving association of massive stars to the Sun.

Lore & Background
Theta Ophiuchi appears to be a triple star system. The brightest component is a spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of 56.71 days and an eccentricity of 0.17. The third component is a 5.5 magnitude star with a stellar classification of B5, separated from the binary pair by 0.15 arcseconds. The primary component is a variable star of the Beta Cephei type with a period of just 3 hours 22 minutes. It has an estimated 8.0 to 8.6 times the mass of the Sun and 4.98 to 5.23 times the Sun's radius. Although only 15.8 to 24 million years old, it has begun to evolve away from the main sequence and has become a subgiant star with a stellar classification of B2 IV. This massive star radiates between 4,740 and 6,230 times the luminosity of the Sun from its photosphere at an effective temperature of about 22,260 K, giving it the blue-white hue of a B-type star.
Reader's Guide
Theta Ophiuchi holds significance as a multiple star system that includes a Beta Cephei variable, a class of pulsating stars important for studying stellar structure and evolution. Its membership in the Upper Scorpius sub-group of the Scorpius–Centaurus OB association places it among the nearest massive star-forming regions, providing context for understanding the dynamics and life cycles of young, massive stars. The system lies 1.8 degrees south of the ecliptic, making it subject to lunar occultations and, very rarely, occultations by planets; the next planetary occultation will be by Mars on 3 October 2078. Historically, Theta Ophiuchi has been part of various cultural star groupings: together with ξ Ophiuchi it formed the Sogdian Wajrik 'the Magician' and the Khorasmian Markhashik 'the Serpent-bitten'; with η Ophiuchi it was part of the Coptic Tshiō 'the Snake' and Aggia 'the Magician'; and with ζ, η, and ξ Ophiuchi it formed the Persian Garafsa 'the Serpent-tamer'. A 1971 NASA list of star names includes the name Garafsa for θ Ophiuchi.
