Jan Janssen

The man in glasses who won the 1968 Tour on its very last day.

Jan Janssen (born 19 May 1940) is a Dutch former cyclist who was world champion and the first Dutch winner of both the Tour de France, in 1968, and the Vuelta a España. He rode the Tour eight times and finished all but the first, winning seven stages and wearing the yellow jersey for two days, after stage 16 in 1966 and after the final stage in 1968, when he overtook Herman Van Springel in the closing time trial. Easily spotted in the peloton by his blond hair and glasses, he has been the oldest surviving Tour winner since the death of Federico Bahamontes in August 2023. Born in Nootdorp near The Hague five days after the Dutch surrender in 1940, he dug foundations for the family building firm as a youth and won 25 races in two years after joining the Delft club at 16.
